CONSUMER EMPOWERMENT COMMITTEE
The Consumer Empowerment Committee is an entity focused on sustained recovery from disability (primarily for those with psychiatric issues, but we also welcome those with any disability). In the CEC we draw support from the community, and each other, to help us move into (or stay in) the employment or 'meaningful activity' arena. Across the entire mental health system, researchers are now able to demonstrate that which some of us already know - that work can be very beneficial to people in recovery.
Not only can work give us practical benefits like money, but working can also be very beneficial therapeutically. In work we often find purpose, connect with others, learn skills, etc, etc. Work can be rewarding in many ways, but it can also be very challenging. That's where the CEC comes in. The idea of the CEC is to make sure we have the support we need as we strive for our work goals. The CEC also offers a collective voice to give feedback to many local disability agencies so that they too can try to improve their services to better meet the needs of those they serve.
Please join us at the First United Methodist Church on College St., Uptown.
